Fully Automatic Defibrillators

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen at any time without indication. Each minute someone suffering a cardiac arrest is left untreated the chances of the sufferer surviving decrease by 10 percent. Having an easy to access and easy to operate defibrillator available will save lives.

A fully automatic defibrillator will measure the sufferer's heart rate once the paddles are attached and if the unit detects an irregular heartbeat it will charge and deliver a life-saving shock without the need for input from the first-aider. Once the shock is delivered the unit will indicate that the first-aider can begin CPR. Semi-automatic AEDs are also available, as well as accessories such as cabinets for storage and ease of access, AED Prep Kit to prepare patients for defibrillation and bundle packages that provide an AED along with informational signage, a cabinet and training materials.

The latest amendments to BS8599-1 recommend that workplaces review their first aid needs assessment to determine whether an AED is required, particularly where five or more people are regularly on site. Defibrillators should be clearly displayed, easily accessible and reachable within two minutes where provided. Learn more about the latest BS8599-1:2019+A1:2026 workplace first aid guidance.
