Low cost and easy to add to first aid kits, tourniquets save lives and control severe bleeding from limb injuries. Given the low cost and effectiveness at saving lives, it is hard to justify not including these in first aid provisions, either in public places or workplaces where there are hazards present. ProtectUK recommend that all first aid provisions support the treatment of life-threatening bleeding – tourniquets are often the first item that first responders look for to do this.
In previous terror attacks in the UK, due to a lack of appropriate supplies readily available, many casualties were treated with makeshift tourniquets such as ties, belts and scarves due to poor preparedness.
